Skin hives is a common disease of skin also known as urticaria in medical terms. It is an outbreak of swollen, red, pale bumps or wheals on the skin that appear instantly and disappear also within some time. Although skin hives have two common types of swelling, one that appears on the surface of skin and other that appears below the skin. If the swelling is on the surface of skin, it is called as urticaria while if the swelling occurs beneath the skin instead of on the surface then it is called as angioedema. Although Angioedema is similar to urticaria but urticaria lasts longer than urticaria. Hives can develop either as a result of the body's adverse reaction to certain allergens, or due to sudden changes in weather, medicines, friction, adulterated food, additives, preservatives, pressure, temperature extremes, exercise, insects sting, sunlight, infections, stress and for other unknown reasons as well. The most common foods that cause hives are nuts, tomatoes, eggs, fresh berries, chocolate, fish, and milk. Fresh foods cause hives more often than cooked foods.

The most common symptom of skin hives is itching, burning and stinging along with redness. They are very annoying and frustrating in appearance especially if they occur in a region that is visible externally causing an embarrassing situation. They can appear anywhere on the body, including the regions around face, lips, tongue, throat, ears, genitals, eyes but are more common on the palms and soles of the feet. Hives vary in size from few millimeters to several diameters and at times small hives may join together to form larger areas known as plaques. A single swelling is called as hive but as they occur in groups, they are called as hives. They can last for hours, or up to one day or at times for weeks before disappearing. Hives are not that critical or life threatening but rarely, hives occurs on the throat, tongue, or lungs blocking the airways, causing difficulty in breathing. This condition may become life threatening.

There are several different types of hives depending on the severity and duration of occurrence. The types of hives are acute urticaria, chronic urticaria, physical urticaria and angioedema. Hives lasting for a day or less than six weeks are called as acute urticaria. Hives lasting more than six weeks are chronic and the reason for chronic urticaria is usually unknown. Acute urticaria is usually external while chronic urticaria can affect internal organs such as the lungs, muscles and gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms include muscle soreness, shortness of breath, vomiting, and diarrhea. Physical urticaria is caused by direct physical stimulation of the skin by cold, heat, sun exposure, vibration, pressure, sweating, and exercise. The hives usually occur right where the skin was stimulated and rarely appear elsewhere. Hives that form after firmly stroking or scratching the skin are referred under the category of Dermatographism. These hives can also occur along with other forms of urticaria. The best treatment for hives is to identify and control the triggering factor.
